Walk into most cannabis facilities and you’ll see the same thing at the end of every harvest: bins of spent soil getting wheeled out the door. New bags come in, new nutrients get measured, and the cycle starts over. It’s efficient. It’s predictable. And honestly, for a long time, it was just how commercial cannabis got grown.
We do it differently at Coast Mountain Cannabis, and it’s not because no-till is trendy right now. It’s because once you’ve grown in soil that’s been alive for years instead of weeks, it’s hard to go back to anything else.
What “living soil” actually means
A lot of people hear “organic” and picture a bag of soil with a green label on it. That’s not really the distinction that matters. The difference is whether the soil is alive.
Living soil is a working ecosystem — bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, and earthworms all doing a job. Organic matter breaks down, gets cycled by that microbial community, and becomes available to the plant in a form it can actually use. Nobody’s dosing the roots directly. The soil itself is doing the feeding, the same way it’s done in undisturbed ground for millions of years.
No-till is simply the practice of not disturbing that system. Instead of tearing the soil apart between grows, pulling every root, and starting from a sterile mix, we leave the structure intact. Old roots decompose in place and add carbon. Fungal networks stay connected instead of getting shredded. The biology gets to keep working instead of getting reset to zero every few months.
Why we build it this way instead of buying it in a bag
Our soil isn’t something we scoop out of a bag and toss. It’s something we built — carbon-rich organic matter, high-quality compost, humic and fulvic acids, and a probiotic base that keeps the microbial population active. That base gets fed and topped up between cycles rather than replaced, which is a big part of what let us qualify for our ProCert organic certification in the first place. Organic certification for cannabis in Canada isn’t handed out for skipping synthetic fertilizer — auditors want to see an actual living system behind the claim, not just a label.
The honest answer for why we keep doing it this way is that the plant tells you. Root structure, resilience under stress, the depth of aroma at harvest — it’s all different in soil that’s had time to mature. A container of fresh mix can grow a fine plant. Soil that’s had two, three, four cycles to build its own fungal and microbial network grows something with more character in the jar.
There’s early science starting to back up what growers have said anecdotally for years. A 2025 field study on hemp, funded through USDA research, compared plants grown in no-till, cover-cropped soil against plants grown in conventionally tilled ground. The no-till plots produced meaningfully higher levels of certain cannabinoids and a different terpene makeup than the tilled fields. It’s not cannabis-specific yet, and genetics still does the heavy lifting for potency and flavour — but it’s the first real evidence that how you manage soil biology shows up in what’s in the jar, not just in a marketing brochure.
The trade-offs, because we’d rather be straight with you
No-till isn’t the easy route, and we’re not going to pretend it is.
It’s slower to establish. A brand-new batch of living soil doesn’t perform the way soil with a year of biology behind it does, so patience matters more than it would with a bottled nutrient program. It also asks more of the grower — you’re reading the soil, not just following a feeding chart, and that takes a level of attention that doesn’t scale as easily as pumping synthetic salts through a drip line.
What it gives back is a soil system that gets better with age instead of worse, and a growing process that doesn’t produce a fresh mountain of spent media every few months. For us, that’s worth the extra effort.
